March 5th dawned clear and not as cold-only 8 below zero. So once again we hooked up our sled and headed out. This time we headed across the sound and up the Noatak river a ways. We did a bit of fishing but again, it's still a little early in the season. We are however venturing farther and farther out on our forays which is something we did not do much of in the past as we did not have two dependable snowmachines.
We do now.
The Aurora Borealis has been out this week and it has been spectacular. It comes and goes rapidly some nights and you just have to be lucky and catch it at the right time. The night of March 7th about 10:30pm, we did!
For the first time since we came to Alaska we were able to clearly see colors other than green. Click on upper right picture and you will see what I mean.
These pictures need no explanation.
Saturday March 12th we headed out again. We kept hearing rumors of people catching fish but we have not seen anyone fishing or any evidence on our travels of people fishing. We continued on our quest this time traveling 14 miles out on the frozen sound and closer to the north shore. We chose a spot at random and drilled a couple of holes.
This time we scored.
I caught the first one-my only one but Patty finished the day with three. We invited friends and had a good feed that night.
We continue enjoying the warmer weather and our search for the elusive Sheefish. This endeavor occurred Sunday March 20th. This time we found others fishing near the mouth of the Noatak River 8 miles across the sound. We fished for a couple of hours without catching anything and when the wind picked up blowing the snow around, we headed back in.
We still had fun.
Just a few shots from the apartment.
