Ice diving is just what it says. The folks at the fire department have what is called dry suits. They have are insulated and actually have a layer of air inside next to the body. Yep, they cut a hole in the ice by using and ice auger to drill 4 holes in a square pattern then use a chain saw to cut through the ice. I haven't seen them do it yet but the John you see in the pics does it. The water here is cloudy so you cannot see much due to the fact that the Noatak, the little Noatak, and other rivers drain into the sound. Kinda like the gulf at home at the mouth of the Mississippi. They are trying to talk me into it and although I insist no suit would fit, they tell me they have one.
John has a big boat but no engine that would be perfect for a dive platform. Especially as we could get up the coast to where the water is crystal blue.
Living here is pretty cool (pardon the pun). Yesterday at work we started talking about who was off today and now we have about 12 people who want to bbq this evening. No particular time and we're not sure if we will do it here or down the beach somewhere. Transportation is the problem as not everyone has a 4 wheeler. No big deal, it'll happen. The only problem is that for the last few days there has been ice fog with the temps down in the 40's and as low as the 30's. This is cold because it is also damp. It's a rough life.
Well, take care and I'll send some more of my old emails soon.
Love ya,
Dad
