Germany 8/2005

We got a bit tired of the hustle of Paris so we decided to travel to Germany where we spent  two nights in the town of Wiesbaden (pronounced Viesbaden).  We traveled by train from Paris and we had to change trains in Cologne.  Just outside the doors of the train station in Cologne was a beautiful cathedral that Patty and Christy explored while I waited with our luggage. In Wiesbaden we stayed in a hotel that was first built in 1486 and contained natural hot spring baths.  The town had a huge pedestrian shopping area and actually there was even a beach volleyball championship going on in town.  (There is no beach there so I suppose they imported the sand.) We toured the town that evening and the next morning we took a 5 hour boat tour on the Rhine River.  The river traveled for a while through flatlands before the hills started to rise on either side.  Small quaint picture book German towns began to appear each with a church spire rising up into the sky over each town.  Neat rows of grape vines climbed what appeared to be hills too steep for humans to walk on. Soon we started to pass ancient castles on both sides of the river many surrounded by well tended grape vineyards.   Many of the castles and towns were built on old Roman ruins.

That boat trip was another highlight of the entire trip.
