July 2006

The month of July as you saw in pages past brought a visit from Christy and Mike and Independence day.  In between those events we got out on a few occasions and set out a salmon net we purchased.  We didn't load up but we did get enough fresh salmon to see us through the winter.  Just a note-these salmon once they start their spawning journey, do not eat and will not bite on a hook. That's why we use a net.

Just another note-the salmon we catch are Chum Salmon or better known as dog salmon.  Of the four species of salmon they are considered number three in taste. No matter, they still taste pretty good to us.

July 22, 2006 we went out and set the salmon net before heading up the river to fish. We only caught one small pike but we picked up the net on the return trip and were rewarded with a fresh bounty.

We headed out on a beautiful Saturday in July and set the net off a secluded point. We just hopped out and built a driftwood fire and made smores while soaking up the sun.  We only got one salmon in the hour and a half we were there but it was more than enough for a fresh feast that night.

We set the net on a clear Friday evening with plans to retrieve it Saturday morning. We did retrieve it Saturday but the seas were quite rough making us pay for the bounty that day.
