September 2006

Early September we traveled down to Anchorage to visit the Alaska State Fair.  While there we visited Christy and took in the Weekend Market that is held in downtown Anchorage every weekend during the summer.  We also traveled down to Seward and Soldotna to look at housing and jobs but I did not take any photos while we were down there.

The State Fair was impressive to us as we are not used to a country style fair. There had been judging on everything from the giant vegetables Alaska is know for (the winning pumpkin was 1019 lbs) to all kinds of fruits, vegetables, plants, rabbits, livestock, and even sewing, cakes, and other hand made items.  It is a big deal in Alaska and we sure enjoyed it.

We took a long ride up the Noatak in Mid September and it was the last trip up we took before freezeup.  We traveled past the "canyons" and saw quite a few spawned out salmon just cruising along the surface awaiting the inevitable. We stopped and landed some pretty nice pike on the way back.
