Hello to you folks in the depths winter,
Today is Thursday February 12th. Daylight began around 9am (I think, I am off today and I remember opening one eye to check about that time). The last two days have come and gone with it either snowing while the wind sends it sideways, or with what's already here blowing sideways. The difference? Who cares, it's the same either way. The big difference the last two days is that the temps have been in the twenties-above zero. Today it is sunny, clear, and no wind. The temp is around 30 degrees-again above zero. I know you folks from the tropics think this is still cold. To us old hands (yea right) in the arctic this is a heat wave! I actually looked out the window and saw something I have not seen for months-liquid ice. For those of you not in the know, this is the end result of the sun combining with the ice on the metal roofs. You may know it as water, something we have only seen come out of our faucets since October. It is hard to fathom, even for me who experienced it, that the last few weeks have been staying in the teens below zero, averaging about 14 below. Today it is 44 degrees warmer than the same day last week, and it is still below freezing. I did something today I have only done on rare occasions since leaving New Orleans, I took my jacket off and realized I was sweating-how vulgar. To make matters worse I had the big toenail on my right foot removed four days ago and the pressure of the light boots I am using gives me fits. I feel like I am punished and can't go out and play! Waaaaa! Everybody's feeling sorry for me, right? Right?.............. Oh well, how many of you can say you were looking out your living room window and watched a full dog sled team go by on the frozen bay?
There has not been much happening the last week or so, but this is a good thing I think. Saturday there was a snowmachine race that started and ended here and went through one or two of the outlying villages before returning. Patty and I did go out with the ambulance for the start of the race. There were two small planes there that as each heat (there are different classes of machines that start at different times) started out, they flew low over them until out of site. I looked at John who was with us in the ambulance and told him that if we had to go to work, it probably would not be the racers but the pilot of one of the small planes. They were flying that low, REAL low, and I did not have my camera darn it. It's my understanding that flight rules are a little more relaxed up here (that's probably an understatement).
Well that's short and sweet as I just don't have much to say right now (sounds of applause). I wasn't planning on writing today, it just happened.
Ya'll take care,
Carlo
